CENTRAL FINE is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Wyatt Kahn, his first presentation in Miami. This body of work unveils new explorations for Kahn, an artist who has long been interested in the tensions between the performative qualities of painting, and the plasticity and pictorial capacities of sculpture. In previous paintings and large-scale sculptures, Kahn has considered the reality of negative spaces as well as the confrontation of textures and their substrates. In these most recent paintings, the artist unveils the internal infrastructure of his work, addressing it directly for the first time. He emphasizes its materiality, form, and the structures that earnestly carve/inscribe discursive associations with jewelry, non-representational painting, fashion, among others.
Considering the tradition of the stained glass, Kahn invites us to peek into paintings as we would windows. Each painting is wrapped with marine vinyl, bagging the baggage of painting, while liberating its internal potential. The structural conformations that have long been obscured by opaque surfaces such as linen, lead, or canvas, are finally revealed.
Perhaps, the unveiling allows for an exploration of what constitutes a Painting. The hybridization and elasticity of these works recall Reality Shows, where the infrastructure of each episode is highly complex and manipulated, and yet; through the vinyl, its textures are inferred, signaled, shining through the screen that protects them.
Wyatt Kahn (b. 1983) lives and works in New York. Kahn’s work is included in prestigious collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, FL; and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. This is his first solo presentation in Miami..
